Palmer Rapids Camp & Play Civic Holiday Weekend

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

We're going to go to Palmer for the weekend- unless someone turns the river off or the weather is unexpectedly bad. Just a relaxed summer weekend of car camping at a lovely spot. The water won't be that high, but it's still playable. Great location for the family. If you want some informal instruction or help with your roll, I'm happy to oblige you, but basically, it's an informal get-away. We plan to arrive Saturday morning.

How to Get There
Event Directions:

We will be camping at a campground owned by a local Palmer Rapids farmer named Harold Jessup. We're right on the rive at the rapids, so this is an ideal location. It's car camping, so bring your tent, stove, food, etc. There's a general store in the village if you forget the Kraft Dinner. The faciliites are limited- some picnic tables, outhouses & a pump for water (if you don't bring your own). Harold will charge you $15 per tent per night.

Driving Instructions:
1. North from Bancroft. Take HWY 62 north out of Bancroft. Just past Combermere, you go over a bridge over the Madawaska. Just past that, turn right onto HWY 515. Follow this until it goes back over to the west side of the Mad, over a bridge. SLOW DOWN ON THE BRIDGE! Immediately after crossing, turn right onto River Rd. W. You're following the river, which is on your left. Continue about a km till the road makes a sharp turn to the left. Don't follow it! Go straight ahead onto a dirt road. You will see a crude wooden sign with an outline of a canoe & teepee in orange paint at the entrance. Follow the road to the end, where it opens onto a field. I'm not reserving a specific site as it should not be crowded and this is an impromptu event. There should be no problem with camp sites at this time of year. I have a silver Honda Pilot, AMDT246. Boat is a red Mad River Caption.

2. From the south- HWY 28 east out of Bancroft.to Hardwood Lake, & left onto HWY 514 to where it joins 515 just south of Palmer Rapids. Continue through the village. Continue till 515 hits the river, then just before it, turn left onto River Rd. W., and follow it just as in instructions above.
