Whitewater

Upper Missinaibi River June 30- July 15... FILLED

Outing Type →

The Missinaibi River is a heritage river used to access Hudson's Bay. Voyageur canoes would travel from the St Lawrence to North Bay via the Mattawa and then down the French to Georgian Bay and then through the Sault to Lake Superior where you portaged up the Michipicoten to Missinaibi Lake and its river that drains into James Bay. This is a leisurely long northbound river trip of about 260 km from the hamlet of Missanabie, just below Missinaibi Lake, to Mattice with sections of challenging rapids (mostly CI-CII Tech) and portages (most 360m, one is 1.4 km). Start and finish times are from Barrie.. A 2.5 tandem canoes are looking to fill the third canoe.

Saugeen River - Walkerton to SouthHampton -FULL

Outing Type →

It's definitely for BEGINNERS.- You can think of it as a flatwater trip with a current

Walkerton to South Hampton - it is river - it has a current, but very low, depending on the amount of rain that falls days before the trip - there are 2 very small rapids -
It's fun and we will have a great time.
The goal is to relax and enjoy the trip and the surroundings,
It is not meant as a race or how fast we can do it.
It is a rural river, with lots of access points.
It is about 90 km and we'll do it in 3 days.
Day 1 we meet in Walkerton, where we unload, do the shuttle, have lunch, there is one rapid level 1,
Day 2 we have lunch in Paisley, the best ice cream ever there
we camp at Saugeen Bluffs Conservation Area.
Day 3 is fun as the river meanders in a lot of side arms.
We will also hope that day to see the Bald Eagle's nest again.
We share food, everybody decides upon a meal.
More information closer to the date.

if you need a canoe - let me know - so that we can book those or share a canoe with a fellow paddler

Itinerary description

DAY 1
Leave Walkerton around 12.00
There is a level 1 rapid within the first hour after leaving near the bluffs - depending on water level pretty easy - but we will scout it for novice
Camp between 3rd and 4th bridge - There is McBeath Conservation area - but because it is long weekend - it is very noisy - loud - and messy and a lot of raccoons - so I prefer to go to crown land just before mcbeath either on right or left side.
It will be a short day paddling - but a lot of us maybe had a long day due to packing /loading and driving

DAY 2
This will be a boring day as there are less water ripples as some people say
But I find it nice and relaxing - time to catch up with fellow paddlers and enjoy nature and the outdoors
Lunch and Icecream will be in Paisley
Camp at Saugeen Bluffs Conservation Area - there is a nice hike to the look out point
For the 'not so wilderness' people there are flushies and showers here

DAY 3
Can be fun as on Sunday there is an event where people build floats and float down the river just past Saugeen to Port Elgin
We will probably still see some on Monday
Lunch under Port Elgin bridge
and then the big event of the weekend - find the Bald Eagle nest
enjoy the currents and the exploring the small creeks of the Delta of the river
NOTE: this can be a long day
We probably will be finished around 5.00 pm depending on how things are going, current/speed on the river, wind.

The bugs are bad, so don't forget bug spray, please remember that any product with deet in it is not good for your clothing or camping gear,
I ran into some poison ivy 2 years ago - so make sure you wear long pants and shoes and socks at all times
Bring a smile and lots of fun.
Im looking forward in sharing this adventure for you all

Required Items to Bring

life jacket - closed toe shoes for if we need to walk in the river - if level is low

Recommended Items to Bring

canoe - tent - sleeping and cooking gear - smile - good humour - camera
more to follow
Canoes can be rented, and i have extra tents you can borrow for a small fee

How to Get There
Event Directions

walkerton - follow Hw 9- 109 to Walkerton
Directions to Lobies Park once in town
more detailed directions follow once I know who all is coming

Carpool Info

depending who is coming
we can meet at Hw 9 and hw 400 at about 6.00 am
So the goal is we meet in Walkerton in Lobies Park on Saturday May 20, 2017 between 8.30 and 9.00 am
you can join later - around 11-00-12.00 but we'll leave your car then at the starting point. and shuttle at the end
There is an option of camping at lobbies park on Friday night.
once we unload our canoes and gear - we will drive to Southhampton - Dennies Dam - to park our cars - we follow each other - so we won't be searching who is where
As we have enough people, we probably can do our own shuttle - preferably a driver that doesn't have a canoe.
It will take about 2 hours to do the shuttle - so the people that stay behind in Walkerton bring a good book to read - as there will be a lot of people loading and unloading canoes and we don't want our equipment to be lost.

Notes

This is a laid back, relaxing trip, time to stop and enjoy nature, explore the creeks and maybe beside cows see some wild life

Summer Weekend at Palmer Rapids, Lower Madawaska River

Outing Type →

Just another relaxing summer weekend at Palmer Rapids on the Madawaska River. We stay at local farmer Harold Jessup's campsite right on the river at the rapids. This is an enjoyable weekend for novice or better moving water paddlers. Probably more people have had their first taste of moving water here than in any other spot in Ontario. There are a couple of sets of Class 1-2 rapids almost outside your tent door. I'm happy to give some informal paddling pointers to new river runners. If people are interested in something a little different, we can do short basic river safety and rescue clinic- moving water swimming, rope work, recovering pinned canoes, etc. If the water levels are good, more adventurous types might want to get together to take a run down the Lower Madawaska on Saturday.

For families, there's a sandy beach where the kids can play or swim. For those who aren't into paddling, there are restaurants and interesting shops nearby in Wilno and Barry's Bay.

We're going to be there from Thursday afternoon to Sunday, but you can come & camp or go at any time.

You will need a whitewater canoe with flotation, and a helmet, along with the usual PFD and paddle. Canoes can be rented nearby at Paddler Co-op (see their website www.paddlerco-op.com), or from Madawaska River Rentals (see their website www.MadRiverRentals.ca ), or from Don Adams in Griffith, who will even deliver to Jessup's for a fee (613-333-2240). If renting, tell them you want thigh straps in the canoe. It will make a huge amount of difference to your control.

For those looking to escape camp cookery, try the famous Wilno Tavern: http://www.wilnotavern.com/index.php

The Wilno has a Polish buffet Saturday nights that will fill any hungry paddler. There are also some other good restaurants in Barry's Bay.

Please register as soon as possible so I can reserve a group camping area.

You need a Royalex whitewater canoe with flotation bags, etc.-as described above.

The campsite provides basic facilities of some picnic tables, outhouses, and water pump. It's car camping. We prefer to bring our Toronto water, but many prefer the well water. There is a general store and a small restaurant nearby in Palmer Rapids. Camp fees are in the range of $20-$25/tent/night.

How to Get There
Event Directions

Direction to Palmers Rapids
& Harold Jessup’s Camp Ground.
 From Peterborough - go north up Hwy 28 to Bancroft.
 In Bancroft, turn left on Hwy 62 thought Maynooth and Combermere.
 In Combermere, just over the bridge turn right on Hwy 515.
 Just after you cross over the river again on your right you will see a local road (River Bend Road) turn right here --the river is on your immediate right.
 The road goes more or less straight.
 When it makes a sharp turn to the left, there should be a one lane dirt driveway straight in front of you. You will see a wooden sign with a teepee and canoe in orange paint.
 Go up the low hill and drive along until you come to the campground.
 Look for my silver Honda Pilot with double roof racks.
 If you actually get into the village of Palmer Rapids, you've gone too far along 515, so just turn around, go back..
 The address of the campground is 266 River Bend Road.
 I believe the fee is $20-$25 / tent / night.

April 20th- The Mad River

Outing Type →

The Mad River is small and has a nice but not overwhelming flow to it. You do need to be able to manoeuvre confidently mostly in tight turns and on a few occasions under a branch of an overhanging tree or a sweeper on a side of the river. You need the ability to paddle class 2 rapid though there are no class 2 rapids on the river.

We can meet at York Mills and Yonge - NW parking lot at 8am for carpooling and then at Riverside Dr at 9:30am (west of Creemore, just north of #9 where you can see the river). We will shuttle to concession 3 (via #9, Centre Line, Webster Rd). We will be finished around 3pm. Bring lunch.

Black River at Washago

Outing Type →

The Black River empties into Lake Simcoe south of Washago. There is a fun short section from the HWY 169 bridge crossing to the next concession road crossing to the west where the river loops around through a number of small rapids separated by flat sections. The section ends with an optional more challenging technical chute, followed by a Class 2 rollercoaster ride. This is an ideal spot for budding moving water paddlers to get some experience, and practice ferries and eddy turns. I'm happy do give informal pointers, and we're in no rush. The section of river is short enough that if you get cold or wet, you can quickly paddle out. However, if you want to work the section, you can play all afternoon. As a bonus, we meet at 11:00 so you don't have to haul yourself out of bed early to get there. We'll also finish around 3:00, so plenty of time to get back to the family dinner. Bring a lunch and we'll eat on the river. As the water will still be cold, you will need a wetsuit or drysuit. This is a relaxed day of paddling play & practice on a fun, forgiving stretch of river.
