Southwestern Ontario Early Spring Paddle

Outing Type →

Early spring is a good time to paddle in Southwestern Ontario.  Choosing a weekend from 5 months away is a game of chance but has worked so far.  Sometimes weather can be wintery or spring like.  Water levels can be high or already disappointingly low.

The rivers I hope for are usually the Bayfield, Benmiller section of the Maitland, South Maitland, 9 Mile and Priceville/Durham section of the Saugeen.  During lower water years we usually paddle the Maitland and Saugeen.

These paddles can be relatively calm or exciting class one with sweepers and occasional class 2s.  They are always cold water paddles and require proper gear!

We stay at Camp Kintail in rustic camp cabins.  The costs are reasonable and past participants have enjoyed their stay.  Please be mindful of other groups using the facilities at the same time.  I will not be collecting money until 2027.  People can fill out what nights and meals they plan to attend.

Please note that this only concerns those who want to join in or are coming from a distance.  Some folks just show up for a day paddle or stay somewhere else!

For those who sign up a spreadsheet will be sent out to arrange paddlers, canoes, attendance and details.

Itinerary
Itinerary description

Tentatively,

March 19th the Friday.  A few people have asked me about the Elora Gorge. We could paddle the Gorge and then down a ways.  I have never paddled past the park area.  Levels depending!  We could also consider the Eramosa, Bronte or 16 Mile. I have never paddled these three so a little help on logistics would be appreciated!

Saturday.  To be decided closer to the date.  We can always break into two groups if desired.

Sunday.  I like the Priceville to Durham section of the Saugeen or Benmiller section of the Maitland on the Sunday!  Fingers crossed!

Required Items to Bring

Winter sleeping bag and pillow if you are sleeping at Camp Kintail.  Please note a sunny day in Toronto can be a cold and windy day on the shores of Lake Huron!

Safety gear, cold water gear, drysuits, helmets, lunches and warm drinks.

Sense of adventure and thankfulness to get out paddling again.

Recommended Items to Bring

For those who sign up a spreadsheet will be sent out.  Some people might need a partner or canoe.  Items needed will be evident on the spreadsheet.

Other
Notes

Picking a weekend is tricky.  Before Easter is always best and heading into April the Hwy 7 runs begin.  We have thus far gone ahead whatever the weather and been fortunate.
