Quetico

Outing Type →

Hunter Island exploration of Quetico from West to East. I am planning to drive up from Toronto on the 3nd in order to get a start on the 5th. There is some flexibility on the start and finish. I have booked the entry point and will bring my own canoe. The itinerary does not have to be fixed as there are no marked campsites or portages in Quetico, although they are there. Winds are generally west to east. I have been going to Quetico for over thirty years and it beats all other wilderness parks in Ontario for solitude, fish and scenery that I know of. I am a relatively skilled outdoors person, but not a leader and would only look for partners and would look to collaborate.

Itinerary
Itinerary description

Putting in at Lac la Croix, planning to get a tow into McAree Lake entry point and head into the deep interior of the park and coming out at Dawson Trail. Moving every day with a layover day or two as required. There is no need for a fixed itinerary so it will be planned with the group. There will be fish. I do the portages in two goes usually, i.e. this is not a mad dash. Best to leave at dawn in Quetico as the lakes can get windy later in the day.

Required Items to Bring

The usual lightweight camping gear and food. I have everything for the group leftover from the days I took my kids, so can loan some items. Food I am dehydrating but you should bring your own or consult with me. I have all the bear bangers, ropes pulleys and such like.

How to Get There
Event Directions

Fly into Thunder Bay or drive from Toronto (about 18 hours). Plan to start from Lac La Croix ranger station at noon or so. Possible to leave Toronto early am and make it by air on the 5th.

Carpool Info

We are travelling up with two in one car, could accomodate more, from Toronto. Transport is available from Thunder Bay airport by shuttle ($195) to put in point.

Other
Notes

Tow into McAree is (about)135 per person. (this is a tow by motorboat of our gear and canoes) because Lac La Croix is huge and I have spent nights winded there. Flights to Thunder Bay are cheap, canoe rentals typical. Shuttle from Dawson Trail to Lac La Croix may be about 200 for all, say 40-50 each.

Cancellation Policy
easy as I don't have to pay for the group (beyond my deposit) until we show up.
