Two years ago, myself (Dan) - age 11 and my Dad, Jack did our first Arctic canoe trip together. We paddled the Mara/Burnside Rivers to Bathurst Inlet, NWT. We presented this at the WCA Symposium 2009. Now, two years later and after my Dad went more into debt, we are going to be doing the Mountain River, NWT!
I am now 13 years old and my Dad is still too old to get in for the kids price at the movies, although he still tries! We will be flying to Edmonton on Thursday July 1 (Happy Birthday Canada!) and then into Norman Wells the next day, Friday July 2.
We have a voice only SAT phone, so I will be calling my Mom, Heather, every day and she will type in the BLOG for me.
I have attached the picture of my Dad and I before we took off from Yellowknife two years ago. I am the one on the left.
I also included my Dad and I on the Petawawa River in 2007.
Talk to you on Friday July 2, before takeoff from Norman Wells.
Dan
Dear WCA,
Well, we're finally in Norman Wells and I'm really excited to canoe the Mountain River! The weather isnn't quite good enough to fly out yet so we might have to stay the night. We have some pictures but, unfortunately we can't upload them. We arrived in Edmonton last night at around 11pm local time. We slept in the airport and I had to use my dad's sleeping bag(he should really wash it more often). I didn't get much sleep, but it was enough to get me through today. This morning we had breakfast at Harvey's. Well not really breakfast because I had a burger and fries(with gravy) and a coke and it was only 6:30am. I loved it! I don't know when we're leaving but I'll keep you posted. Dan
Dan and Jack have been out of touch, most likely due to the bad weather and sat phone issue. I am in touch with Heather and will post an update as soon as they send a word. Aleks Gusev
