Toni Harting passed away on Friday 22 Nov

Friends,

On November 22, 2013, Toni Harting completed his life journey at home in Toronto. Born in Sumatra, Indonesia on February 16, 1927, he lead a remarkable life and very much marched to the beat of his own drum. Cremation will take place in private.

A long-time Nastawgan Editor, renowned photographer and an author, Toni will be sorely missed by his WCA family. We'll discuss how best to remember Toni in due time, if you have any thoughts please let me know. We'll run a story about Toni in the Spring issue.

Thanks from Jan Bignell and family

Jan Bignell and Bob's family in the UK would like to thank all those members who have shown caring and support at Bob's passing, and especially to Al Jacobs and Rob Butler for their contributions to the Nastawgan and the Fall meeting. It has been very comforting to know that Bob was so well respected and his company appreciated
by so many fellow canoeists and outdoor enthusiasts. Thank you all so much.

Jon's a legend.

Just want to let everyone know that our own Jon McPhee took first place in the Legends class at last week's open canoe race at Minden on the Gull River- for the second year in a row.

Congratulations, Jon, from all your friends in the WCA.
Way to go!

Royalex’s Manufacturer to Cease Production

If you’re considering the purchase of a Royalex canoe, you might want to get your order in soon.

PolyOne, the U.S. manufacturer of the material is closing plants and discontinuing unprofitable products-which includes Royalex. From our perspective as canoeists, we could not imagine Royalex as an insignificant product line. However; to a large plastic resin producer, it represents a tiny part of the plastics market, with no opportunity for future growth. It’s not difficult to understand the financial rationale for this decision. The down-sizing should be complete by the end of 2014, so the writing is on the wall.

Clearly, this will have major repercussions for a number of canoe-builders, who are hoping that a buyer for the product line will be found. If not, what happens next is anyone’s guess.

If you need a new or replacement Royalex boat, I’d get it now; just in case.

PS we do not get too many good attempts to publicly announce our concerns for canoe routes.
This is a good chance to let our voices be heard!
