Looking for additional participants to take part in planned trip on Arctic Canada's famed Horton River. I am one of three currently signed to traverse the full 400 miles of the river from Horton Lake to the Arctic Ocean - about 3 and a half weeks. (Half river options 12 days.) Five are needed to make the trip viable with three canoes, participants and one outfitter guide. You may choose full river or select upper or lower segments. Max size for either leg would be ten participants/2 guides.
Upper Horton: Horton Lake to midpoint July 6-18
Lower Horton : Midpoint to virtual end of river near ocean outflow July 18-30
Allow couple of days before and after trip dates for commercial flights to and from Yellowknife and then to bush flight departure/return locations....Norman Wells and Inuvik.
Outfitter supplies: Canoes, tents, food, guide(s), overnight lodging at NW and Inuvik, bush flights to/from insertion/extraction points.
Skills largely beginner with some intermediate, largely for moderate rapids just after midpoint (lower river). Past trips report great fishing, lots of wildlife from wolves, musk oxen, caribou, bears, wolverines, etc. plus beautiful high arctic hills and plateaus. Nearly 24 hour sunlight and often evening hikes to tops of river valley for sweeping views. Lower includes visit to famed "burning hills" - deposits of lignite which have been slowly smouldering for many years with exposure to air. Also a chance for a final plunge in the Arctic Ocean if you are up to it.
